Technology Use in the Mathematics Classroom Essay
Technology Use in the Mathematics Classroom Technology is a growing field that affects every aspect of our everyday lives. When I look at centuries past, I am amazed at the technological advances this country has made. Just during my lifetime, computers, cell phones, digital cameras, and many other devices have become a huge part of everyday life. Not only is technology affecting every day life, but it is also making a huge impact on education, especially within the mathematic field. Computer programs are being created everyday to aid in the understanding of mathematical concepts. Calculators are replacing the pen and paper method of tabulating answers. The question that remains is, ââ¬Å"Are the uses of technology helping or harmingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I was learning how to use a program called Solid Edge to generate drawings, but before the program was introduced to the class we had to learn to create the drawings by hand. The program made creating the drawing in 3 Dimension a lot easier but if I ever need to create a drawing by hand I have been given the knowledge to do so. My professor tau ght the pen and paper method for creating drawings and then taught us how to use the computer program to create the drawings faster and more precisely. The students in that classroom will be prepared to create drawings with or without the aid of computer programs. The Technology Principle also makes the statement that ââ¬Å"technology enhances mathematic learning.â⬠I agree with this statement and do believe that a lot of programs available today help students visualize math concepts. I, for instance, am awful at visualizing objects in a three-dimensional space, so a program that generates threedimensional objects is very beneficial to me. My concern is that the use of these programs will cause students to rely on technology to solve problems instead of relying on themselves. It seems to me that students might be tempted to say, ââ¬Å"Well the computer program can figure this problem out so I wonââ¬â¢t attempt the problem myself,â⬠and this is a problem.
